KISS and Make-Up Paperbacks!
The God of Thunder returns in the New York Times Bestseller – Now in paperback and hotter than hell!

* More insight from the Demon – Including the making of Destroyer and the truth behind the greatest rock band in the world * Look for all four special collector's covers * And more photos

You wanted the truth, you got the truth—the hottest book in the world!

Fueled by an explosive mix of makeup, costumes, and attitude, KISS burst onto the music scene thirty years ago and has become a rock institution. The band has sold more than eighty million records, has broken every concert attendance record set by Elvis Presley and the Beatles, stands behind the Beatles alone in number of gold records from any group in history, and has spawned more than 2,500 licenses.

There would have been no KISS without Gene Simmons, the outrageous star whose superlong tongue, legendary sexual exploits, and demonic makeup have made him a rock icon. KISS and Make-Up is the wild, shocking, unbelievable story, from the man himself, about how an immigrant boy from Israel studied to be a rabbi, was saved by rock and roll, and became one of the most notorious rock stars the world has ever seen. Before Gene Simmons there was Chaim Witz, a boy from Haifa, Israel, who had no inkling of the life that lay ahead of him. In vivid detail Gene recounts his childhood growing up in Haifa under the watchful eye of his beloved, strong-willed mother, a concentration camp survivor; his adolescent years attending a Jewish theological center for rabbinical studies in Brooklyn; his love of all things American, including comic books, superheroes, and cowboys; and his early fascination with girls and sex, which prompted him to start a rock band in school after he saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show.

KISS and Make-Up is not just the classic story of achieving the American dream through the eyes of an immigrant boy making good, but a juicy, rollicking rock and roll read that takes you along for the ride of your life with KISS, from the 1970s, when they were the biggest band in the world, through the ’80s, when they took off their world-famous war paint, and into the ’90s, when they came back bigger and badder than ever to become the number one touring band in the world.

In his own irreverent, unapologetic voice, Gene talks about the girls (4,600 of them and counting); his tight bond with KISS cofounder Paul Stanley; the struggles he and Paul had with Ace Frehley and Peter Criss and their departures from the group; the new band members and Eric Carr’s untimely death; the enormous love and affection he has for the people who put him there in the first place—the KISS Army and the ever-loyal KISS fans around the world; his love life, including stories about his relationships with Cher and Diana Ross and with Shannon Tweed, Playmate of the Year, mother of his son and daughter, and his companion of eighteen years; and much more.

Full of dozens of photographs, many never-before-seen pictures from Gene’s private collection, KISS and Make-Up is a surprising, intimate look at the man behind the mask. For the first time Gene reveals all the facets of his complex personality—son, rock star, actor, record producer, businessman, ladies’ man, devoted father, and now author.

Indianapolis KISS Expo 2002 Review #2

From: Michael Shoemaker
Having both missed the annual expo earlier this year, my friend Anthony and I were determined to attend this one. It was like a “second chance” that was meant to happen.

The event location was new. This provided a fresh atmosphere and nicer facilities. The room the expo was held in was smaller but wider than the room at the hotel where this was previously held. As a result, a closer view of the stage came for all.
As soon as I entered the room, I found my friend Steve Stierwalt, his wife Michelle, and my other friend Ted Wilson at the KISSfreaks.com table. After saying my hellos, I made my way around to the other vendor booths. There were some of the usual vendors as well as some new ones. This made for a good mix of new merchandise along with the “same old stuff”. Although it felt like walking past a buffet while on a diet, I managed to keep from buying anything other than one CD and one videocassette.

Indianapolis KISS Expo 2002 Review

The new location of the Indianapolis Expo really rocks. This event usually held at the Four Points Sheraton on the city's east side, took a major step forward by moving to the Holiday Inn on the north side of town. A much better hotel and the banquet room the event was held in, was just awesome.

I won't get into a long drawn out review. Once again I was so involved in the day's events that its hard to describe everything that goes on at the Expos.

As far as merchandise goes there was a nice choice of old and new. I hate to go to these and see only stuff from the Reunion Tour until the present. This wasn't the case today. I think most of us have the newer items. I like to see the rare old stuff or custom made fan items. The custom made items are better than a lot of stuff KISS actually licensed. Speaking of fan made items, a fan named Darryl Lefevre stopped by the KISS Freaks table to show me an airbrushed hockey mask which he had an airbrush artist make. The design featured Ace's makeup with a large open mouth around the facemask of the mask. Very cool looking!

Ace Frehley Pick Ups Added to KISS Klearance $12.99

New Sealed miniature replica of the Gibson Les Paul as used by ACE FREHLEY of KISS. Very cool! These were pulled from production because they did not have Ace's blessing. The guitar measures about 7 inches. Featuring that famous sunburst look! Includes lightning bolts on the neck and Ace of Spades at the top. The bottom of the package says" Gibson USA Les Paul as used by ACE FREHLEY. Very rare since they have been pulled.

My Night With Don Lemmon, Two Hotties...
Paul Stanley and Tommy Thayer of KISS!

From: Don Lemmon
Written by: Jason Gateman
I have just gotten back from a night I never imagined happening in my lifetime anyhow. To tell you the truth, it's probably the most surreal night that has ever happened to me so far. 1 hour ago, I was sitting at Cleopatra's Barge in Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas Nevada having a conversation with Paul Stanley. Yes..... Paul Stanley from the rock band KISS. Not to mention..... KISS's fill in guitarist (the one who plays for Ace Frehley when Ace isn't there), Tommy Thayer. How do I describe it this to you?

KISS Freaks Note: A MUST READ! Too Funny!

Kevin Conrad Original Psycho Circus Comic Artwork!
Todd McFarlane Productions releases original art from KISS - PSYCHO CIRCUS issues 29, 30 and 31 back to the creators.

After nearly 2 1/2 years, KISS - PSYCHO CIRCUS creators Kevin Conrad (inker of entire series) and Clayton Crain's (Penciler of issues 18 - 31) patience has finally won out with the return of their orginal art from the final three issues.

With complete issues 29 and 30 going to Crain, Kevin Conrad has received the complete interior and cover to PSYCHO CIRCUS' final issue, number 31, along with the originally solicited cover for that issue, plus one additional cover/solicitation. This marks the first and last time ANY original PSYCHO CIRCUS art will be made available to the public. The creators were paid by separate check for their original art during the first 28 issues of the comic. After the series was canceled, the final three issues' artwork sat in limbo for 2 1/2 years until a decision was made to finally return it to the rightful owners.

Presently, the ONLY issue that will be available for sale to collectors is issue 31. There will be a ten day auction on E-Bay starting Thursday evening, October 03, 2002. For more information, or to view the pages, visit http://www.kevinconradart.com/

Cleveland KISS Expo 2002 Reviews

From: Dan Foley

I honestly wish that I am able to provide any type of compliment for this Expo, however I have searched long and hard...and nothing comes to mind (with the exceptions of course of the great fans and friends you get to see!).

The 5th Annual Cleveland KISS & Rock Collectors Expo was held Sept. 29th, 2002 at the Rollerworld Center in Parma, Oh., Guests were to be Mark St. John, Bill Aucoin & KISS Tribute Band Destroyer, and the "mind blowing KISS Expovintage museum". Times were 10am-8pm, and as of the fliers which were circulated at the July Detroit Expo, admission was $18.00 AT THE DOOR ONLY (the promoters website and subsequent fliers indicate $18 advance/$20 at the door),

SYMPHONIC KISS JUST FOR US

From: Bruce Sullivan

Hi Steve

Well I guess the rumor was true about Kiss doing a one-off concert in
Melbourne. Here is what was printed in the Herald Sun on 9th October 2002.

SYMPHONIC KISS JUST FOR US
by Cameron Adams - Music reporter
Rock legands Kiss will drag out their endless farewell tour for an unusual
world exclusive in Melbourne next March.

The rockers will celebrate their 30th anniversary by performing a concert
with the Melbourne Symphony as their backing band.

The event, featuring the orchestra playing amped-up Kiss classics, will be a
one-off.

Kiss fanatics are expected to travel from interstate and overseas for the
show.

The band specifically chose Melbourne to host the concert, which is expected
to be televised live by an American TV network.

The concert will feature the original Kiss line-up of Gene Simmons, Paul
Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.

Kiss will visit Melbourne this month to promote the concert and meet the
orchestra. Kiss played to more than 30,000 fans in Melbourne in 2001.

There was a mistake in the report, they actually had that Kiss played to
more than 30,000 fans in Melbourne in 2000.

KISS Hell Interview with Eric Singer
ERIC SINGER Q&A - KISS Hell eXclusive - 9/14/02

KISS HELL: What have you been up to lately?
ERIC SINGER: Playing gigs this past summer w/ Gilby Clarke, Ronnie Montrose, Alice Cooper and KISS events.

KH: How's the Alice tour going?
ES: We have only done 4 shows so far. We have 3 months of shows coming up. Go to AliceCooper.com for tour dates.

KH: Will you be working with Alice on his next studio album?
ES: I have no idea what plans Alice has at this time.

KH: Can you tell us about the song you did on the Avantasia-Metal Opera CD?
ES: It was a ballad. I have not heard the final mix yet...

KH: How did you get involved with playing on Avantasia part 2?
ES: I met Tobias Sammet in Austria a few years ago. I really liked his talent & we became friends. He asked me to play on that song...

KH: Can you tell us about your new signature snare drum?
ES: It is a 10 ply maple 14"x 6 1/2" silver sparkle finish (laquer). 3 air vents. Great drum & very loud!!!! I Wanted something that would cut thru loud volume music but also had warmth for other types of music as well.

KH: How was it to do 'That 70's Show'? Will KISS be on an episode or just the promo video?
ES: It was fun. It was done for an ad campaign to promote the show going into syndication 5 nites a week.

KH: How was it to return to the studio with KISS to record "Rock & Roll Radio"(Ramones cover)? How would you rate the version?
ES: I am very comfortable in the studio w/Gene & Paul. We have done enough over the years & I think I know what they want & like. They also are always very open to my suggestions & are willing to try what I may have in mind too. The version is really cool (I think).

KH: There's rumours of 2 new tracks to be used for ALIVE IV, has there been anything recorded for it that you know of?
ES: Not that I know of...

KH: Have you been working on any new KISS demos? Any KISS news?
ES: Nothing new recorded or to report at this time.

KH: What are your feelings on KISS touring with or without Ace Frehley in the future?
ES: I really like Ace & would hope for his involvement. I know that Gene & Paul feel the same too.

KH: How has the current Alice set list changed since Brutal Planet? Is "Halo Of Flies" back in the set?
ES: You will have to come to a show & see!!! 'Halo' is not in the set.

KH: What inspired the flaming drumsticks in your solo?
ES: I wanted to do something that I feel was somewhat entertaining for the fans. I have not done this w/Alice since 2000 Brutal Planet tour. I did do it w/KISS last year in OZ.

KH: Are you jamming with Glamnation or any other side projects lately?
ES: No side projects... I did do some shows w/Ronnie Montrose & Gilby Clarke this past summer as well as some stuff w/Queen (Brian May & Roger Taylor).

KH: What's planned for the near future?
ES: Alice Cooper Dragontown tour. Sept. 23rd thru Dec. 15th.

KH: Any last messages for the readers of KISS HELL?
ES: AS ALWAYS THANKS JOE & ALL YOU!!! PEACE/OUT. ES.
